Brest-based bloggers sentenced to five days in custody

Syarhei Pyatrukhin and Alyaksandr Kabanau will have to spend five days in prison each.

The judgments were delivered by Svyataslau Kalina and Dzmitry Shuryn, judges of Leninski district court in Brest.

Interestingly, the two bloggers were not arrested after being sentenced. It is still unknown when Pyatrukhin and Kabanau will endure the punishment. At the same time, the both men have been summoned to the police again.

Former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich, the two bloggers and several activists were detained after Sunday’s protests against constructing iPower battery factory in Brest. During the peaceful rally Kabanau and Pyatrukhin were holding a banner ‘No To Battery Factory!’

The Chinese company is building the battery plant which will produce lead-acid batteries at a rapid pace. Its work may cause severe damage to human health due to lead emissions within a radius of 30 kilometers. Lead dust from production may provoke many serious diseases, including cancer.
