Brest activist may face up to 2 years in jail for allegedly insulting president


Palina Panasyuk-Sharenda, a Brest-based activist of the European Belarus civil campaign, will be sued for allegedly insulting the President of the Republic of Belarus.

The woman is under indictment now, Radio Racyja reports. She may face up to 2 years in prison.

Brest department of the Investigative Committee initiated a criminal case under article 368-1 against Palina Panasyuk-Sharenda.

At first, an administrative case was opened over the fact of placing the banner ‘Lukashenka, you freak! Stop squeezing people dry!’ Policemen questioned European Belarus activists Andrey Sharenda and his wife Palina. The text of the banner was subjected to a linguistic expertise which concluded that there was evidence of insulting Alyaksandr Lukashenkas.

Andrey Sharenda has been aummoned by the investigators. He may become be another suspect in the case.
