Blaze? Activist claims another incident at Belarus NPP construction site

Another serious incident reportedly occurred at a construction site of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets.

According to activist Mikalai Ulasevich, there was a fire in the electric control room of the reactor protection system on February 18, 2018.

It happened during a test run of the reactor protection system equipment. The electric control room burnt to ashes, Ulasevich states with reference to witnesses. To date, the room has been renovated; new equipment have been installed.

Why aren’t locals protesting against the hazardous project? Earlier, many hoped for getting jobs at the would-be NPP. Now the situation has changed.

“The people do not rely on these jobs anymore. They have realised that a number of jobs for locals are being cut down,” Ulasevich said.

Mr Ulasevich repeatedly reported about the incidents at the construction site.

“After the occurrences were made public, the authorities started to take strict measures on withholding information about what was going on there,” the activist stressed.

Ulasevich is calling on Belarusians not to remain aloof to the problem and to take part in the upcoming Charnobylski Shlyakh (Chernobyl Path) rally, which will take place on April, 26 in Minsk.

As reported earlier, the neighbouring Lithuania plans to start dismantling all power transmission lines connecting its national energy system with Belarus. It continues its work at the EU level to create the same competitive conditions for the producers of the EU member countries and third countries and that electricity from the Belarusian nuclear power plant or other similar hazardous power plants cannot enter the EU market. Lithuania also refused to buy electricity from the Astravets nuclear power plant, because it considers the station a threat to its national security.

Our neighbour is not only concerned about the proximity of the station to Vilnius, but also with a number of emergencies during the NPP construction. Among the emergencies are a reactor vessel incident, when it fell during the transportation, the collapse of the concrete structure at the site between the reactors. Our channel was the first to report on the incident. Before the official request of the Lithuanian side, representatives of the Belarusian NPP denied this information.
