Belarusian investigative journalist and Belsat contributor Stanislau Ivashkevich was detained in Minsk on December, 13. On Sunday, the March of People’s Accusing took place across Belarus.
When being detained, the journalist managed to inform the team that he was being taken to Maskouski district police department. Later, the policemen refused to hand over warm clothes brought by colleagues to Stanislau.
Stanislau Ivashkevich has been put into the notorious detention centre in Akrestsin Street, where he is likely to be awaiting trial. It is still unknown what the media worker is accused of.
During Sunday’s protest rally in Minsk, the police also grabbed photojournalist Henadz Veratsinski and news portal Onliner editor Mikalai Hradzyushka.
On December 10, Human Rights Day, Reporters Withoud Borders said that Belarus confirmed its status as Europe’s most dangerous country for journalists. According to the watchdog, of nearly 370 arrests of journalists between 9 August and 30 November, around 80 have resulted in a prison sentence. At least 62 journalists have been victims of violence, mistreatment or even torture while detained,
In late November, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) made a list of media workers who are facing heavy sentencing over criminal cases. There are nine names on it; five of them are Belsatters’ names.
At the moment, three Belarusian journalists against whom criminal charges were brought are behind bars: Darya Chultsova, Katsyaryna Andreyeva, Katsyaryna Barysevich. Belarusian human rights defenders recognised them as political prisoners.
It is an open secret that messages from outside give enourmous support and encouragement to a prisoner; that is why we urge our readers to send letters to the jailed journalist:
