Belsat TV journalist fined for covering protests in Orsha


Belsat TV journalist Katsyaryna Bakhvalava (Andreyeva) has been tried in Orsha on Monday.

(UPD) BYN 690 fine has been imposed on our colleague (appr. $360). According to the judge, Katsyatyna Bakhvalava had no right to cover protests in Orsha as Belsat TV is not accredited by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry.

She is accused of violation of law on mass media and disobedience to police (Articles 22.9 and 23.4 of the Code of Administrative Offences). According to preliminary information, the journalist is facing up to 15 days of arrest.

On March 11-12, residents of a number of Belarusian towns ( Orsha, Babruysk and Rahachou) took to the streets to protest the so-called ‘parasite’ law. In Orsha, Belsat TV journalists were forced to get into a police car when they were livestreaming the policemen detaining politician and former political prisoner Pavel Sevyarynets. They managed to film Russian tricolors in the car of the Belarusian special police force (OMON).
