Girl brings ecstasy into Belarus, gets jailed for 12 years

A 24-year-old girl from Vitsebsk was vacationing in Cyprus. Upon arrival home the girl was detained in the National Airport: customs officers found one and a half ecstasy tablet on her.

She had hidden the drug in a sock. The girl explained to the police that she had received the tablets from an acquaintance at a nightclub and knew nothing about their properties. Later, she retracted her testimony, saying that she got the substance planted in Turkey.

At the trial the woman partially admitted her guilt. However, she continued to insist that she was not going to distribute the tablets.

During the vacation she contacted her friend over the Internet and discussed the pills and their therapeutic effect. She insisted that their talk about the pill should not be considered in the context of the use of prohibited substances, but as a sedative to combat depression, even though in the correspondence they called the relaxation effect of the drug “the trip”.

The court found the Vitsebsk dweller guilty of transporting across the border especially psychotropic substances, as well as of the illegal purchase with intent to sell. She was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment in a penal colony under the general regime without confiscation of property.
