Belarusians should speak Belarusian more – FM Makey

Belarusians should speak Belarusian more, Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makey told journalists in Prague during the festivities dedicated to the 500th anniversary of Frantsishak Skaryna’s publishing the Bible.

“Everything depends on a person. If we are Belarusian, if we realize that there will be no country without the language can not be the country, the language will live and the country will develop. But nothing should be done artificially, it should come from the soul, from the heart. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is trying to contribute to the development of the Belarusian language. For example, the day before yesterday we had a great event in Madrid. A Spanish girl translated Maxim Bogdanovich’s poems into Spanish, her Belarusian is excellent – this is an example for many Belarusians who perhaps feel too shy to speak Belarusian. We need to speak the Belarusian language more. We are trying to do this in our ministry and encourage people. But there should be a soul and heart in such actions,” Makey told svaboda.org.

Prague is hosting the international symposium ‘Skaryna and Prague’ organized by the National Library of the Czech Republic, the National Library of Belarus and the Belarusian Embassy in Prague.
