Belarusians becoming poorer, particularly in rural areas

According to the experts from the Belarusian Economic Research and Education Center, rural poverty is on the rise in Belarus. Currently, the share of people who live there for less than 183.82 BYN per month may reach 15-20%.

According to final data, the highest poverty rate has been traditionally recorded in the Brest, Homiel and Mahiliou regions, and it is constantly growing. Experts say that considering the significant gap between urban and rural populations, every fifth Belarusian may be living below the poverty line.

Proportion of the population with the level of disposable income below the subsistence minimum was 6% versus 5.4% last year.

Alyaksandr Lukashenka set the government an ambitious goal to reach the salary of 1,000 rubles by the end of the year. Independent experts currently see no factors that would contribute to a rapid increase in the population’s welfare.
