Belarusian soldiers rehearse for Victory Day parade in Minsk

The initiative to hold annual parades on May 9 was launched by Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union

On Monday evening, the central part of Independence Avenue, the city’s main street, was closed to motor traffic: in Victory Square the guard of honour was rehearsing for its participation in the celebration on the occassion of the 71st anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany.

While the soldiers were honing their skills, the Minskers jumped at the opportunity to walk along Independence Avenue which was clear of cars.
