Belarusian man sentenced to 9 years in prison for Skype fraud


The 23-year-old resident of Svetlahorsk, who stole Skype user accounts, was sentenced to 9 years in prison, an official spokesman for the Investigative Committee, Yulia Hancharova, said. The man acted in collusion with a foreigner who was put on the wanted list.

The Svetlahorsk resident purchased information about more than 17,000 Skype user accounts and access passwords at specialized forums on the Internet. The defendants studied the accounts, blocked access to their rightful owners, and then sent text messages to their contacts asking them for money transfers to their accounts.

During the investigation, more than 40 Belarusian citizens were found to have suffered from the fraudulent actions. The 23-year-old Belarusian was charged with unauthorized access to computer information, attempted deliberate blocking of computer information and attempted fraud. On January 23, a Belarusian court sentenced the man to 9 years in prison.
