Despite the coronavirus threat, the Belarusian Orthodox Church does not intend to cancel sacred processions at Easter or during other holy days, news agency Interfax reports.
It is pointless to prohibit holding cross processions during Easter, church officials stress.
“A procession takes place in the open air. We are not going to ban people from walking down the streets, aren’t we? ” archpriest Syarhei Lepin, Head of the Information Department of the Belarusian Orthodox Church, said.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, icons and crosses started to be disinfected in the churches, he added. The Belarusian Orthodox Church does not plan any additional activities during Easter.
As of March 27, the number of coronavirus infection cases has totalled to 94 in Belarus, the Health Ministry said on Friday.
As reported earlier, the Council of Ministers is taking measures to prevent and spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Belarus. In particular, the government bound the arrivals from abroad to self-isolate for 14 days. At the same time, the Health Ministry is still refraining from recommendations to impose quarantine measures on educational institutions due to ‘inexpedience’.
