Belarusian memorial chapel among winners of prestigious New London Architecture Award


The Belarusian memorial chapel is among the winners of the prestigious New London Architecture Award.

The building of the Greek Catholic Church of St. Cyril of Turau and All Saints patrons of the Belarusian people won the award in the category People’s Choice as the project gained the highest number of votes on the Internet.

The building was also shortlisted in the categories Energy -Efficient Building and Culture and Community.

The Belarusian Greek Catholic (Uniate) Church has become the first wooden shrine in the British capital since the Great Fire of London in 1666.

The new build wooden chapel was commissioned by the Holy See of Rome for the Belarusian Diaspora Community in London to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

It is located near Marian House, from which began the history of the Belarusian Catholic Mission in started in 1946, and in front of the Belarusian library and the museum named after Frantsishak Skaryna Museum founded by Belarusian Uniate priests.

The author of the project is Tszwai Rafael so, a young London-based architect of Chinese origin, who converted to Byzantine-rite Catholicism. He is fond of the Belarusian culture.
