Belarusian drug legislation to be revised

The Belarusian Parliament will soon consider easing the Belarusian legislation on some types of drug-related crimes. This issue will be on the agenda on June 13, TV channel “Belarus 1 reports.

“The representatives of civil society, including “Mothers 328″ and relatives of other convicts, were among them, we did not divide them. All of them were invited, they participated in our work together. Representatives of international organizations, the United Nations, scientists, law enforcement officers and experts also took part in the work. In other words, we considered this issue in detail,” said a member of the Standing Committee of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus, Vasili Chakan.

The tendency to reduce crime in this area has shown that the approaches to punishment can be amended. It is expected that the lower threshold of punishment will be lowered by two years. The sellers will be held punished not by 5, but by 3 to 8 years of imprisonment. For groups, officials and those who commit crimes repeatedly — the punishment will start not from 8, but from 6 to 15 years. This will make it possible to apply the punishment individually and on a case by case basis.

The drug related legislation in Belarus has been notoriously harsh over the years. “Mothers 328” movement was created by mothers of the teenagers and young people who were given long prison sentences over drug related crimes. The movement advocates lighter sentences for youngsters.
