Belarus should improve economic security - U.S. charge d'affaires

To attract long-time investment, Belarus needs to improve its image in the world, U.S. charge d’affaires Robert Riley said on Friday when speaking on 2 June at the international conference Economic Security in a Globalized World.

According to him, foreigners coming to Belarus have some vision of the country. As a rule, it is formed on the basis of its reputation and image.

“And this image is not very positive. Changes are needed because investors are looking for certain things. Long-term investors need the rule of law and clear rules of work in the country,” news agency BelaPAN quotes the diplomat as saying.

In his opinion, such investment may strengthen the economic security of Belarus.

“If you want to be truly independent, you should improve the country’s economic security. When being economically dependent on someone, you will also be dependent in other fields. A 30-year-old man who takes the money from their parents, cannot say he is independent. The same goes for countries,” Robert Riley said.

As reported earlier, the Belarusian authorities asked Russia for another loan ($700 mln) to refinance its external national debt.
