‘Belarus’s most critical voice against Russia’: Coda Story releases video about Belsat TV

A video by Coda Story tells foreign viewers about Belsat TV work and mission.

Coda Story focuses on the complicated situation Belsat TV has faced in 2017: the Belarusian authorities stepped up the persecution of its journalists and cameramen. In total, the channel’s contributors fined by Lukashenka’s regime have to pay about $9,000 to the state budget.

“Belarus in one of the most censored countries in the world. But for 10 years a network of journalists have been working from their apartments to bring uncensored news to thousands of Belarusians. Belsat TV is the only channel that dares to criticize the country’s dictator Alyaksandr Lukashenka. They have been raided, intimidated, threatened… And now they may be shut down. Not because of the Belarusian regome, but because of the Polish government supporting it now wants to cut funds to the opposition channel. The reason? Geopolitics. Moscow has changed its tune on Belarus fueling fear that the country could be the next Crimea.”

Belarus is seen as a buffer between Russia and Europe, Coda Story journalists warn. The EU wants better relations with Europe’s last dictator Lukashenka while Lukashenka seeks the EU’s financial aid.

Among other things, the cartoon gives answers to the question why Belsat TV should continue its existence calling the TV station ‘the country’s most critical voice against Russia’.

Coda Story is a single-issue web platform that puts a team of journalists on one crisis at a time and stays with it, providing unique depth, continuity and understanding to events that shape our world.
