Belarus-Russia scrapping roaming charges: Long way to go

Belarus and Russia are discussing the ways to drop roaming charges, Communications and Informatization Minister Kanstantsin Shulhan said on Thursday.

According to him, a number of options were submitted for the Russian partners’ consideration.

“It [one of the options] does not provide for cancelling roaming charges by the end of the year. The process may need two to three years to finish but we could work synchronously and would understand what we are trying to achieve. We have already developed our own vision of the process. It has been agreed with Belarusian participants. We now intend to get Russia’s approval.” state-run news agency BelTA quotes the official.

The process of scrapping the roaming charges might be getting ‘slower’, but it takes time to reduce the ‘financial burden’ on users and mobile carriers, Shulhan said. He stressed the need to coordinate work and resolve the problem in a ‘calm manner with the least losses’.

“It should be done smoothly, over certain periods, using control points, at which we can analyze how the work is going,” the minister added.

In August 2018, Russia and Belarus announced the resignation from charging additional tariffs for telephone calls, but no exact date was given.
