The top Belarusian diplomat has not revealed the names of prospective candidates for the post.

As reported earlier, Julie Fisher, who is currently serving as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Europe and the EU, may be appointed US Ambassador to Belarus. According to the Belarusian Foreign Minister, Belarus has not yet received a formal request from the US side regarding the alleged appointment.

“The US side intends to send its ambassador to Belarus in the offing. If this happens, it will show that the United States is interested in the speediest normalization of relations with Belarus,” Uladzimir Makey stressed.

At Saturday’s meeting with President Alyaksandr Lukashenka, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed that Washington would soon appoint its envoy to Belarus.

In September 2019, top US official David Hale held negotiations with Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Uladzimir Makey. As a result, the two countries announced their decision to renew diplomatic representation. Earlier, Belarus cut the US Embassy staff to 5 from 35 persons; in 2008, the states recalled their ambassadors.
