Belarus presidential election-2020 may be held in 2019 – CEC Head

The next presidential election may be earlirized, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, Chairperson of the Central Election Commission in Belarus, said.

According to the top official, if the electoral legislation has not been changed by the end of 2018, she will approach president Alyaksandr Lukashenka about the next presidential campaign.

“The case is that in 2020 the presidential and the parliamentary elections will fall to the same time interval. It should be decided which company will be the first. In addition, next year we will have to include a certain amount of money in the budget for the beginning of the campaign in the autumn of 2019,” she told the newspaper Respublika.

The presidential election is to be held no later than August 30, 2020; the deadline for the elections to the House of Representatives is September 10. But Lidziya Yarmoshyna is against the idea of combining the two campaigns.

“Of course, these two election campaigns should be separated. There have been cases of their being combined in the world practice, but it is always due to some conflicts. For example, after the events on Bolotnaya Square in Russia, the time lag between the presidential and parliamentary elections made up for almost 1.5 years. Security and stability issues make us hold these elections having a rather long period of time between them,” she stated.
