Belarus opposition asking US not to forget about sanctions


Belarusian opposition leaders have sent a letter to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo who is due in Minsk soon, the United Civic Party of Belarus (UCPB) reports.

In their appeal to the top US diplomat, the politicians focused on the fair elections’ being a priority and urged him to remember Washington’s obligations under the Budapest Memorandum.

“The issues of security, fair elections, and stopping persecution are currently on the agenda, and we mentioned them in our address to the head of the US Department of State. We reminded of the Budapest Memorandum, and Belarus’ internationally binding commitment to holding fair and free elections. We did not forget the question of targeted sanctions against the Belarusian officials who are involved in finishing off political opponents and vote rigging,” UCPB Chairman Mikalai Kazlou states.

The letter was also signed by Dzmitry Kuchuk (the Greens), Ihar Barysau (Belarusian Social Democratic Party), Yury Hubarevich (movement For Freedom), Pavel Sevyarynets (Belarusian Christian Democracy Party), Alyaksei Yanukevich (Belarusian People’s Front).

On Friday, Mike Pompeo has met with the Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Vadym Prystaiko and President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv. On February 1, the US State Secretary will spend a few hours in Minsk and then fly to Kazakhstan. Initially, the diplomatic tour was scheduled for early January, but it was deferred to a later date due to the situation in the Middle East.
