Belarus’ independence is not in debate – Lukashenka’s press secretary

Alyaksandr Lukashenka did not hold any session on the independence of Belarus, presidential press secretary Natallya Eysmant told RIA Novosti.

“You know, we made up our minds about the issue of independence long ago in our country, and it is out of the question now. No meetings were on the subject, it [the reports] is just a product of someone’s fevered imagination,” the Russian news agency quotes Eysmant.

On December 15, the Belarusian newspaper Nasha Niva reported with reference to its own sources that Lukashenka called a closed meeting on the future of the independence of Belarus. During the event, its participants reportedly decided to ‘stand for independence to the end’.

In December, Alyaksandr Lukashenka and Vladimir Putin publicly argued over the gas price Russia set for Belarus. Moreover, Russia’s tax maneuver is likely to result in Belarus’ losing BYN 630 mln in 2019.

Last week, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russia was ready to further deepen integration with Belarus, which many perceived as a threat to the country’s sovereignty.
