On February 17, the founding meeting of the Society for Eastern Policy was held in Warsaw. The initiators of its estblishing the Society are experts who have been focusing on eastern affairs for long.

The basic goal of the organization’s activity is to support Poland’s eastern policy and give it a s active dimension as possible.

“I think it is time such a platform was created. I am pleasantly surprised by the response to this initiative,” Belsat TV Director said Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy said.

Agnieszka Romaszewska-Guzy was elected President of the new organization; its Vice President is Dr. Łukasz Jasina (Polish Institute of International Affairs), Secretary General – Janusz Wdzięczak (Polish Economists’ Society). In addition, many people specializing in the issues of Eastern Europe have become members of the Society: Maria Przełomiec (host at Studio Wschód), Prof. Andrzej Nowak, Prof. Przemysław Żurawski vel Grajewski, Rafał Dzięciołowski (The Foundation For Assisting Poles in the East), Marek Menkiszak (expert of the Centre for Eastern Studies), Bogumiła Berdychowska (expert in Ukrainian issues), journalist and reporter Tomasz Grzywaczewski. The initiative was also supported by Sławomir Dębski, Director of the Polish Institute of International Affairs, and Adam Eberhardt, Director of the Centre for Eastern Studies. The both experts promised to provide all possible assistance and contribution to the activity of the newly-created body.

According to the founders, the Society will be an independent and apolitical organization.

Jerzy Giedroyc and Juliusz Mieroszewski whose activity significantly influenced the shaping of Polish eastern policy are considered as patrons of the organization. Their work resulted in the re-evaluation of political concepts in our region, recognizing the acceptance of post-war borders and building partnerships with other Eastern European nations (Ukrainians, Lithuanians, Belarusians) as the basis of Polish eastern policy. It aimed at counterbalancing Soviet/Russian domination and imperial expansion.

In the near future, the Society intends to take certain steps for the activation of Polish eastern policy, both in terms of supporting Polish diplomacy and developing the so-called soft power.
