Belarus improves its place in Global Peace Index

The Global Peace Index (GPI) is designed to present the situation in the country and the region around it in terms of peace and stability. What are the countries similar to Belarus in this respect?

Since 2007, the index has been determined by the Institute of Economics and Peace, which is headquartered in Australian Sydney and specializes in analyzing the economic costs of war, criminal or state violence.

In the index of 2017, Belarus ranks 103 out of 163. The most highly ranked and safe country in the rating, according to analysts, is Iceland. Syria, torn by the war, which has been raging there since 2011, is in the 163nd place.

In recent years, Belarus has gradually improved its place in the rating — from 107 to 103 in 2016 and up from 120nd place in 2015. The main factors that have dragged us down so far have been, in the opinion of analysts, the actions of the siloviki, criminal and political instability .

Neighboring Poland ranks 33rd, Ukraine — 154th, Russia — 151st, Lithuania — 37th, Latvia — 32nd.
