Belarus Free Theatre play hits NYTimes top 10 shows

Ben Brantley and Jesse Green, chief theater critics of The New York Times, have shared their picks for the best shows of the year. Burning Doors by Belarus Free Theatre is on the list.

“Subversion that matters, delivered with artfully channeled rage by Belarus Free Theater, based (and banned) in Minsk. The troupe returned to New York this fall with a five-alarm, viscerally charged tour through the past and present of the art of resistance in Eastern Europe, from Dostoevsky’s parables of self-laceration to the fabled protest performances of Pussy Riot,” Ben Brantley said.

The work is based on the performance of Russian activist Pyotr Pavlensky who set fire to the door of the Federal Security Service (FSB) in Moscow.

“Congratulations to Free Theater – the award is just and well-deserved,” Nicolai Khalezin, the Belarus Free Theatre director, said on Facebook.

Earlier, Burning Doors became the winner of the British theatre award Offie’2017 in the category Best Ensemble.
