Minsk City Court denied the cassational appeal of Belsat TV cameraman Ales Barazenka on Tuesday.

Our colleague, who is now serving his 15-day term, was not allowed to be present in the courtroom, his interests were represented by a defense lawyer. At the lawyer’s request, the video of the arrest filmed by Barazenka himself was shown again. One can hear that, contrary to the evidence of the riot policemen during the first trial and the protocols drawn by them, Barazenka does not swear, does not shout slogans and says he is a journalist.

However, the judge of Minsk City Court did not accept the evidence of Barazenka’s innocence and upheld the previous ruling. The journalist will be released from the detention centre only on April, 9. Barazenka is still hunger-striking; he only drinks water, juice and tea.

“We hope they are on the right side of common sense. We expect the judge to watch the video and make sure that Ales did not violate any rule and did not swear,” Alyaksei Minchonak, Belsat TV representative in Minsk, said earlier.

Our colleague was arrested during the live broadcast from the non-parasite march and Freedom Day celebration in Minskaccused of ‘disorderly conduct’ and sentenced to 15 days in jail. According to riot policemen who were witnessing in court Ales was shouting, waving his hands, using bad language. After being detained, Ales Barazenka went on hunger-strike in protest.

While in a paddy wagon, Ales Barazenka got in touch with our colleagues in the studio. Our cameraman tried to start a live stream from the paddy wagon, but due to the disruption of the 3G and 4G network it lasted for a short time.

The video above features Barazenka saying ‘I am a journalist! I am a journalist!’ when the police were arresting him. No strong language is used. There is a rhetoric question: do the Belarusian authorities consider these words profanity?
