Belarus could profit from not launching BelNPP

Official Minsk calls Astravets NPP the hope for energy independence of the country. And experts in the field of ecology call it a waste of money, environmental and economic trap. Vital Tsyhankou interviewed the activist ecoactivist Anastasia Darafeyeva whose arguments are stronger and whether we can really benefit from not launching the NPP.

According to environmental activist Anastasia Darafeyeva, the Belarusian nuclear power plant is a political project, bearing no economic benefits and the desired energy independence. The expert stressed that the European Union countries had adopted a strategy to abandon “dirty energy”. Using non-ecofriendly energy, Belarus will not be able to export it or even sell goods made with its help at good prices.

“Neighbors will not buy this electricity,” summed up Darafeyeva and recalled that it’s not too late to stop the plan called Astravets NPP until the reactor is launched.

What is the least painful way out of the situation with the nuclear power plant?

“Belarus is currently getting rather weak signals that if it abandons this project, if it opt along with Europe for renewable energy, it may get help,” said Darafeyeva.

Besides, the guest of the program reminded about the problems with the safety of the future NPP. Recommendations are not implemented, and the possibility of public control is virtually absent.
