Belarus considering oil supplies from U.S.

The Belarusian authorities are working out the format of the American oil imports, Belneftekhim press secretary Alyaksandr Tsishchanka reported on March 16, BelTA informs.

Alyaksandr Tsishchanka notes that the possibility of oil supplies from the U.S. is not excluded and “the format is being worked out”. According to him, it’s about forming negotiating positions.

Also, work is underway to restore pipeline oil supplies from the Baltic ports to Belarus.

Alyaksandr Tsishchanka added that the concern is doing everything to make it profitable to buy oil against the background of fluctuations in world prices.

“We monitor the market, study and work with all possible suppliers,” he said and added that “no major transactions at new prices have been recorded yet”.

Meanwhile, supplies of alternative oil to Belarus continue. Thus, on March 17, another tanker with 80 thousand tons of oil should come to Klaipeda.

In addition, on March 15, the second tanker with Azerbaijani oil moored in the port of Odessa Yuzhny. Oil pumping from the first tanker towards Mazyr Oil Refinery has already started and it will be delivered to the plant for processing this week.

On February 1, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo promised to provide Belarus with 100% oil. Later, the head of Belarus said he asked Pompeo to “help us [Belarus] with infrastructure and oil supplies”.

On March 13th Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus Uladzimir Makei had a telephone conversation with Mike Pompeo. They discussed the results of the visit on February 1 as well as issues of bilateral cooperation, regional and international agenda and energy security.
