Belarus citizen who fought for Donbas separatists facing 25-year jail term in Ukraine


The charge has been read out to Belarusian Dzmitry Novikau in Druzhkivka City Court in Donetsk region of Ukraine. The native of Vitsebsk is facing up to 25 years in prison.

Dzmitry Novikau, 31, is accused of participating in a terrorist group (art. 258-3 of the Criminal Code); conducting of a war of aggression (art. 437); a crime in an organized group (Art. 28) and violation of the order of entering the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine (Art. 332-1), Vitsebsk Spring reports.

According to Ukrainian investigators, Novikau was fighting on the side of separatists as a member of the DPR terrorist group from November, 2014 to June. 2015. In 2017, he returned to ‘military service’. The man who was a commander at the Somalia tank battalion participated in assaulting Donetsk Airport. He was detained on August 10, 2018.

The judge extended the period of detention for another two months and adjourned the hearing until October, 30.

Novikau’s wife and child live in Belarus.
