Belarus CEC Chair spoke about election dates

The Chair of the Central Election Commission, Lidziya Yarmoshyna, stated that the presidential election in Belarus is be held no later than August 30, 2020, and the election of deputies to the House of Representatives – no later than September 6, 2020. There’s only a week difference between the two.

The news came from “Radio Svaboda”.

“In the Belarusian legislation there is only the term “no later than”. That is, it is impossible to hold elections later than these dates. But you can do it before this date. However, the legislation does not state how much earlier it can be done,” explains the CEC Chair Lidziya Yarmoshyna.

The CEC Chair noted that the legislation does not prohibit holding elections even this year.

“I admit that one election can take place at the end of this year, while the other — in 2020. I still think that two election campaigns should be spread over different years. But since the Central Election Commission does not call the elections, the head of state and the parliament will decide everything. I think that everything will become known in April, when the president delivers a traditional address to the people and parliament,” Yarmoshyna said.

According to Lidziya Yarmoshyna, the CEC employees are now preparing documents for both election campaigns, regardless of which one comes first.

The previous presidential election in Belarus was held on October 11, 2015, the last parliamentary elections — on September 11, 2016. The president is elected for 5 years, the MPs — for 4.
