Belarus bans transporting ‘radionuclide sources’ during European Games


Belarusian Prime Minister Syarhei Rumas signed the decree ‘On temporary suspension of transporting ionizing radiation sources’.

In accordance with the decision, the Nuclear and Radiation Safety Department of the Emergency Ministry shall suspend the issuance of permits for the importation and exportation of radionuclide sources (1-3 category of radiation hazard) from/to the territory of Belarus for the period from 17 June to 2 July 2019.

The decision was taken to ‘prevent nuclear terrorism and radiation accidents in crowded places during the Second European Games in Belarus, the decree reads.

The decree has been published on pravo.by.

The 2nd European Games will be held in Minsk in June 21-30, 2019. For the first time it took place in 2015 in Baku; it was started rolling by Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s close friend, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev, who definitely wants it to run and run. However, holding the event may cost Belarusians $30-40 mln.
