April Fool's joke puts Hrodna website in hot water

NUR-SULTAN, KAZAKHSTAN – MARCH 24, 2019: Inside the Bayterek Tower. On March 23, 2019, the Kazakh capital Astana was renamed Nur-Sultan in honour of Kazakhstan’s former leader Nursultan Nazarbayev. Sergei Fadeichev/TASS

The Hrodna ideologues did not like the joke published by the Hrodna.life website on April 1. Now the editors can end up in court.

On Monday, an online publication about the life of Hrodno published a playful material that the city will be twinned with Kazakhstan’s Nur-Sultan, and Nazarbayev will be put here instead of Chapaev’s bust.

The reaction of local ideologues surprised the site’s editor, Alyaksei Shota, he admitted to the monitoring service of the Belarusian Association of Journalists.

“We joked that the Hrodna residents would give Kazakhstan a monument to Viktar Liskovich, a rather important person in the city. And I thought this man had a pretty good sense of humor. However, an hour after the publication of the funny news on the site, we received a call from the ideology department of the regional executive committee and were asked to remove this information. Because, they said there would be some repercussions in the form of a court proceedings,” said Alyaksei Shota.
