Closing Belsat down would be tragedy for our future – ex-presidential candidate Milinkevich

One should not liquidate such a pivotal project as Belsat, Alyaksandr Milinkevich, a former candidate for the presidency in 2006, believes.

According to him, the shutdown of Belsat TV would be a tragedy not only for democracy in Belarus but for the entire country. The Belarus-EU economic and political dialogue might be of importance, but the Western cooperation with civil society is extremely significant as well.

“If they stop talk to and cooperate with civil society in Belarus, it will be a mistake for the day after tomorrow. What will happen to us tomorrow? Some day democratic elections will be held and people who share democratic values will need to work for the victory [by creating public opinion]. I think everyone realizes that Belsat’s plays a major role here,” said Milinkevich.

On Sunday evening, Witold Wazczykowski, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, voiced the ministry’s plans of the channel’s transition to a web mode and its journalists’ transfer to TVP Polonia.

There is an online petition to support “Belsat” on the Internet. To sign it, you need to follow the link.
