Activists protest as construction starts at mass burial site near Minsk

BelaPAN news agency has reported that on 21 February a criminal case was opened “on account of a large scale damage”.

The construction of an office building started a few dozen meters from the Kurapaty — burial place of Stalinist repression victims.

In the morning, the activists led by the leader of “Young Front” Zmitser Dashkevich began a long-term action in defense of the memorial.

The activists planned a 24/7 watch near the construction site, similar to the one in 2001-2002, when the Minsk ring road was being built nearby.

A member of the Conservative Christian Party of the Belarusian Popular Front Ales Chakholsky told “Belsat” that the construction is fraudulent: according to documents, the office center will appear in the Pershamaisky District, while the land is assigned to the Soviet district of the capital.

No official agreement was concluded With the residents of the ‘Zyalyona Lug’ neighborhood, people are outraged and have already collected several hundred signatures against the new construction.

Meanwhile, the director of the company in charge of the construction near Kurapaty said he disagreed with the allegations that the construction was carried out “on the bones”.
