87-year-old woman convicted in Minsk for flag on balcony


On December 15, a Minsk court convicted Lizaveta Bursava for a white-red-white flag on the balcony of her apartment, Belsat

On December 15, a judge of the Kastrychnitski district of Minsk, Alyaksandr Rudenka, found 87-year-old Lizaveta Bursava guilty under Article 23.34 of Administrative Code.

According to the protocol, on December 13, the woman held a mass event in her apartment by placing the white-red-white flag on the balcony.

Lizaveta Bursava could not hear everything at the trial. But she did not agree with the protocol.

“The president used this flag for 2 years, I did not know that it was banned,” she said.

Judge Rudenka fined Ms Bursava 15 basic units – 405 BYN.

Lizaveta Bursava is 87 years old and 7 months old. She is from a Jewish family. During the occupation, together with her mother and grandmother, she was able to leave Vitsebsk on the last evacuation train in July 1941 and therefore did not die at the hands of the Nazis.

In the 1950s, she was a multiple champion and record holder of the BSSR and the Belarusian Military District in bullet shooting, the USSR record holder, she represented Belarus at all-Union and international competitions.

When asked after the trial if she thought about leaving for Israel, the woman answered: “No, I love Belarus very much.”
