Pavel Seviarynets, sentenced to 3 years of correctional treatment


One of the leaders of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party (BCD) was sentenced to 3 years of correctional treatment. He is banned from leaving the Republic of Belarus.

During the 2010 presidential election campaign the opposition activist was an agent of ex-presidential candidate Vital Rymasheuski. Pavel Seviarynets was arrested after the peaceful demonstration on the day of the presidential elections, December 19, 2010.

Since 1995 the politician has been closely cooperating with a number of opposition organizations (the Young Front, the Belarusian People’s Front). In 2005 he was sentenced to 3 years of correctional treatment for protesting against Lukashenka’s running for president for the third term. Later the term of service was reduced to 2 years.

Pavel Seviarynets was arrested on December 20, 2010 and later sentenced to 3 years of restriction of liberty for «organization and participation in actions that seriously disrupt civil order ». At the moment the political prisoner is in the village of Kuplin (Brest region) where he does labouring jobs.
