A court enforcement officer haunts Poczobut's apartment

On Monday, a court enforcement officer has paid a visit to Andrzej Poczobut’s house in order to make an inventory of all his possessions. According to the court, the journalist is indebted to the Belorussian state, because he did not pay taxes last year and did not cover the cost of his 15 day detention, when he was arrested after the December 19th demonstration. According to the Belorussian law, deteinees have to pay for each day of their arrest. Poczobut’s debt to the state is alltogether 6 million rubles (1.100 dollars).

Oksana Poczobut informed the officer that their entire property has been already inventorized by the KGB. – My husband pays his taxes in Poland, and this year he has not managed to submitt the proper document, because he was arrested – she explained. She also suggested that the court enforcement officers send their documents directly to Hrodna detention center, where her husbend is currently held.

– They know very well where my husbend is, and if they need a response to their question on when the fines will be paid – they contact Andrzej through his lawyer. – said Oksana Poczobut, suggesting that the officer visit is meant to exert pressure on their family and to worry the arrested journalist.

The journalist of Gazet Wyborcza Andrzej Poczobut is accused of slandering and offending the president based on two articles of the Belorusian Criminal Code. He can be sentenced to two to four years of prison. The next court hearing is scheduled to be held on June 23rd, at 10.00 am.
