Belarussianization of TV coming soon – top official

At least 30% of the content on Belarusian TV channels should be in the Belarusian language, Natallya Kachanava, Head of the Presidential Administration, said.

On Tuesday, the top official met with the staff of Belaruskali company.

“The head of Information and Ideological Work Department asked her about the need to promote the Belarusian language on domestic TV. Natallya Kachanava admitted it and recalled that the task to provide at least 30% Belarusian-language content on national TV stations had been set,” news agency Interfax reports.

During the meeting, Mrs Kachanava also commented on the Belarusian-Russian relations.

“Everyone knows that Belarus is a peace-loving country. We are on friendly terms with all the countries that are kind to us. Belarus has a special relationship with our main partner, Russia. The head of state always says: “The Russians are our brothers.” And complicated issues will be resolved,” she said.

(UPD) In turn, presidential press secretary Natallya Eysmant has told RFE/RL that Kachanava’s words were misinterpreted. The case is the content ‘mae in Belarus’, not the language of broadcasting, she stressed. At the same time, one can expect that the Belarusian language will be used more often.
