On December 28, there was not a single attempt to cross the border illegally, although the Polish Border Guard Service wrote that groups of up to 30 people were spotted near the border, but ran away when border guards approached.
This has not happened since August. Every day, Polish border guards noticed attempts of illegal crossing from the Belarusian side, detained the bulk of the offenders, and then turned them back to Belarus. In total, the Poles have counted 39.5 thousand violators of the Belarusian-Polish border since early this year.
The Lithuanians also noticed a relative calmness at the border. But the Minister of Internal Affairs said that border guards will be on full alert during the holidays, as “they need to be prepared for any scenarios.”
Researcher of the Center for New Ideas, sociologist Henadz Korshunau believes that the “Polish stage” of the migration crisis is over, but the “Latvian stage” may begin. A record number of violators was recorded at the Belarusian-Latvian border recently.
