Iran's FM urges Belarusian side to help Iranian citizens stranded on border with Lithuania

On October 26, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Belarusian counterpart Uladzimir Makey had a telephone conversation concerning the Iranian nationals ‘stranded on the Belarus-Lithuania border’.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran is gravely concerned over the situation of its citizens. He [Amir Abdollahian] demanded that Belarus consulate officials and border guards offer humanitarian cooperation for the purpose of locating the stranded Iranians and providing them with medical care. The foreign minister urged the Belarus government to give the Iranian embassy in Minsk access to the Iranians so that the people will be repatriated to their country,” the Iranian MFA’s press service reports.

The ‘worrisome news’ regarding the situation of the above mentioned citizens are going viral on the Internet, the top Iranian diplomat stressed. He called on Belarusian border guards to render aid to the Iranian nationals.

In turn, Uladzimir Makey briefed Amir Abdollahian on the measures taken to identify and find the Iranians and reaffirmed Minsk’s readiness to provide maximum assistance in this regard.

In May this year, Lukashenka said he would no longer hold back the flow of refugees from the East heading to EU countries. After this statement, the number of migrants trying to enter the EU from the territory of Belarus increased sharply. First, dozens and then hundreds of migrants were stopped daily by Lithuanian border guards. Then lots of them headed for Latvia and Poland. As a result, Poland and Lithuania are building fences on the border with Belarus.

Brussels accuses Minsk of deliberately provoking a migration crisis in response to sanctions imposed on Lukashenka’s regime. The EU is now preparing the fifth package of sanctions against the regime over its use of migrants as a tool against the European Union.
