Lukashenka engages in double blackmail, German politician says

According to Der Spiegel, the co-chair of the Alliance 90/The Greens party Annalena Baerbok, who was recently nominated for the post of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany in the new government, stands for a tough course with regard to Alyaksandr Lukashenka’s regime, the DW reports.

“We are experiencing double blackmail from Lukashenka,” said Annalena Baerbock. On the one hand, he uses migrants to disengage Europe. On the other hand, Lukashenka wants the Europeans to recognize him as an interlocutor, even though he suppresses the opposition, the politician stressed. According to Baerbok, “dictators should not be allowed to blackmail.”

The leader of “The Greens” is sure that the right thing to do would be to tighten European sanctions and continue putting pressure on Lukashenka.

Annalena Baerbok admits that it is impossible to conduct foreign policy without a dialogue. Nevertheless, she criticized two phone calls of Angela Merkel to Alyaksandr Lukashenka. In her opinion, it is important for Poland and Germany to act together.
