Homiel: Tsikhanouskaya’s election agents facing harsh sentences

A Homiel court keeps considering the case of members of the initiative group of Belarusian presidential candidate Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

The trial of Yury Ulasau, Dzmitry Ivashkou, Alyaksandr Shabalin, Tatsyana Kaneuskaya started on April, 12. They are charged with ‘participating in riots’ (Part 2 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code) and ‘plans to seize office buildings’ (Art. 292), Ulasau was also accused of ‘insulting a public officer’ (Art. 359). All four persons are Homiel residents and political prisoners.

In the course of Tuesday’s hearing, public prosecutor Dzyanis Mikushau demanded the defendants be given long prison terms (Yury Ulasau – 6.5 years in a medium security penal colony, Tatsyana Kaneuskaya – 6 years in a minimum security penal colony, Alyaksandr Shabalin and Dmitry Ivashkou – 6 years in a medium security penal colony).

The verdict is to be announced by judge Alyaksei Khlyshchankou in Chyhunachny district court on May 3 at 10.30 am, human rights centre Viasna reports.
