Although political prisoner Yauhen Barouski urgently needs medical assistance, he was placed in punitive confinement instead, the human rights centre Viasna reports. The man fell ill behind bars.

“His nose is swollen, he is coughing terribly and he has a headache. Most likely, the sinusitis has already started,” Yauhen’s wife Veranika Barouskaya said.

On January 24, Veranika visited the penal colony Yauhen is being held in and and filed complaints.

In April 2021, Yauhen Barouski and three more men were tried for the events of 11 October 2020; he was charged under Article 364 of the Criminal Code (‘violence or threat of violence against a police officer’) and Article 342 (‘organisation and preparation of actions, seriously violating public order, or active participation in them’). According to the prosecution’s version, during the dispersal of the Honour March near Pushkinskaya metro station the four defendants prevented riot policemen from detaining a man, got into a fight with them, struck several policemen on the heads and broke the windows in the service vehicle.

Yauhen Barouski was sentenced to four years of imprisonment in a minimum security penal colony. The Belarusian human rights community recognised him as a political prisoner.
