Another Belarusian student punished for protesting


On December 22, the human rights activists report about the verdict in the criminal case against the BSUIR student and political prisoner Ivan Nikanau.

He was charged under part 1 of article 342 of the Criminal Code (“Organization and preparation of actions that grossly violate public order, or active participation in them”).

Ivan Nikanau was detained on October 12, 2021 for participation in a protest on October 25, 2020. Since then, the student has been in the pre-trial detention center in Minsk.

The court sentenced Nikanau to three years of restricted freedom and sent him to an open-type correctional facility. After the verdict, he was released in the courtroom before being sent to serve his sentence.
