22 years in jail: Savchenko found guilty of complicity in Russian reporters’ deaths


Russia’s court has found Nadiya Savchenko, a Ukrainian military pilot, guilty of complicity in the deaths of two Russian journalists Igor Kornelyuk and Anton Voloshin who were killed by mortar fire, and sentenced her to 22 years in a penal colony.

The reading of the verdict was interrupted by Savchenko’s singing the national anthem of Ukraine, tvrain.ru reports.

According to eyewitnesses, a group of people holding photos of the killed Russian journalists appeared in the courtroom.

The trial of Savchenko started In September, 2015. The Ukrainian pilot is accused of murdering Russian journalists and illegal border crossing. In her turn, the woman denies any wrongdoing. According to Savchenko, she was abducted by force and transported to Russia. In protest, Nadiya Savchenko started hunger-striking several times. Savchenko’s lawyers state that at the moment shelling the defendant was in captivity in Russia and, consequently, she was not able to regulate fire.

Russia’s Prosecutor’s Office asked for 23 years in prison and a 100,000-ruble fine (about $1,400) for Savchenko. According to the judge, the evidence was logical and confirmed by case papers, which is enough for finding the defendant’s guilt.

Nadiya Savchenko is also a MP and member of the country’s delegation to PACE. She has been under arrest in Russia since July, 2014.
