Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya has condemned Russia’s decision to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed DNR and LNR on the territory of Ukraine.
“Territorial integrity is the cornerstone of state sovereignty. Its blatant and repeated violation by Russia against Ukraine means a continued threat to regional security and increased instability in Europe. Belarus condemns this step,” Tsikhanouskaya wrote on Twitter.
The incumbent authorities of Belarus have not yet commented on the Kremlin’s actions against Ukraine. But on February 17, Alyaksandr Lukashenka said that the solution to the issue of recognition of the “republics” would be joint with Russia and mutually beneficial.
“We will agree with Putin on what we can do to make it better for Russia and Belarus. But it will be a joint decision,” he said.
So far, the LNR and DNR have been recognized by other Kremlin satellites – Syria, Nicaragua, Cuba, Venezuela, unrecognized Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and the Yemeni Houthis.
