Fighting continues overnight in Donetsk, power, water supply erratic

Residents of the Kyivsky, Kirovsky, Leninsky and Petrivsky districts in Donetsk woke up to the sound of heavy artillery overnight, says a report posted on the City Hall Web site.

‘The overnight fighting disabled 44 transformer substations in the Petrivsky district and cut power supply to residential buildings in the Petrivsky district and the suburbs of Biriuzova and Hrabari,’ the report said.

Only two out of 28 disabled transformer stations have resumed operation in the Kuibyshevskyi district as the hostilities are slowing down the repair teams’ work.

Water supply is erratic in the Kirovsky, Kuibyshevsky, Leninsky and Petrivsky districts. The Donetskmiskvodokanal administration is working on its stabilisation.

Public transport is operating under the weekend schedule.

The online edition Novosti Donbassa said that militants opened fire at the Donetsk Petrivsky district at 05:00. Eyewitnesses said it was impossible to bring the Trudivska mine workers to the surface because of the shooting.

The Russian side is trying to distract the international community’s attention from the tragedy with the Malaysian passenger airliner in Donetsk region by increasing its military presence on the border with Ukraine, Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Igor Kabanenko said.

‘Today Russia is actively trying to distract the international community’s attention from the event with the aircraft by intensifying the actions of militants, increasing hybrid war scenarios and pulling troops to the border with Ukraine,’ he said at a meeting with Chairman of the Group of the European People’s Party in the European Parliament Manfred Weber.

He stressed that robberies, killing of civilians, hostage-taking and violence were a common picture on the area controlled by militants.
