Aliaksandr Lukashenka: 20 years at the helm

In the 1994 presidential elections Aliaksandr Lukashenka ran away with the second round with 80.6 % of votes. During the first year of his rule the newly-elected President warned that he would be staying in the seat for long.

The best part of our neighbours have chosen the way to a united Europe and democracy. Having elected Lukashenka the Belarusians seem to have gained twenty years of populism, repressions, empty promises and tightening the screws. Who knows how many opportunities Belarus has lost under Lukashenka’s rule.
