Tsikhanouskaya meets with U.S. Secretary of State


On July 19, Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington, D.C., and Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland and State Department Advisor Derek Chollet.

They discussed the hijacking of Ryanair, attacks on civil society and media, illegal migration to Lithuania organized by the regime, and the Belarusian authorities’ attempt to take revenge on the European Union.

Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya also highly appreciated the assistance of the American ambassador to Belarus, Julie Fisher.

Besides, during the negotiations, Tsikhanouskaya urged the U.S to do the following:

  • adopt an emergency aid package for Belarusian independent media, telegram channels, Youtube projects, and investigative journalism;
  • expand aid to civil society, private business in Belarus, political prisoners, and their families;
  • increase the number of scholarship programs to support students and researchers;
  • send a signal to Russia that the contracts and agreements signed with the regime will not be legally recognized and will be annulled;
  • increase political and economic pressure on the regime together with partners;
  • provide diplomatic support to Belarusian democratic forces in other countries;
  • take an active part in organizing and holding a high-level conference on solving the crisis in Belarus.

The U.S. Secretary of State received Tsikhanouskaya in the hall of the State Department. The entire meeting lasted an hour. Blinken also said that he is in constant contact with the White House and President Biden, discussing the Belarusian issue.

On July 20, Tsikhanouskaya will meet with Jake Sullivan, national security advisor to the president, at the White House. She will also visit the Senate and meet with senators.

The working visit to Washington will last until July 23.
