Ukraine intends to purchase electricity from Belarus, Olga Kosharna, the media director of the Ukrainian Nuclear Forum, said on Facebook.

When reached by Belsat, the expert confirmed the above information.

According to the source cited by Olga Kosharna, Hartmut Jakob, Vice President of Ukraine’s company Energoatom, and Irina Kukharenko, its deputy director for legal affairs, were on a visit to Belarus on October 11-13; they were reportedly holding negotiations with representatives of the state-run Belarusian company Belenergo. They reached an agreement to buy 900 Mwatt of electricity from Belarus, Kosharna added.

As reported earlier, Ukrainian Energy Minister Yuriy Vitrenko said during March’s talks with his Lithuanian counterpart Dainius Kreivys that the country was set to separate its energy system from Russia and Belarus as early as 2023.

“The synchronization process is coming to the finish line. Next year, Ukraine will be isolated from the energy systems of Belarus and Russia by switching to an isolated mode. In 2023 full synchronization with ENTSO-E will take place,” the top official stressed.

Then Vitrenko and Kreivys agreed to establish a joint working group that would, among other things, exchange information about the safety status of the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Astravets.
