Man from Vitsebsk sentenced to more than 9 years for 'protesting'

The court of Pershamaiski district of Vitsebsk headed by judge Mikhail Yurchanka sentenced Syarhei Dumau to 9 years and 15 days in a strict regime colony and found him guilty of “organizing mass riots” (Part 1 Article 293 of the Criminal Code), of “organizing riots with violence and causing harm” (Part 3 Article 293) and of “desecrating buildings and damaging property” (Article 341).

Lawyers of Syarhei Dumau are going to appeal the verdict in the regional court.

“No way! No evidence was given,” said Alena, mother of Syarhei, immediately after the verdict was announced. The trial was held behind closed doors, but the mother was allowed to be present at the hearings.

Syarhei Dumau is a designer of industrial and public buildings. He was involved in the design of the urban development of Vitsebsk, but two years ago, his talent was not in demand. The good specialist was left without work, could not find a job anywhere for a long time, and had to work as a watchman.

Syarhei is raising two minor children.
