FSB claims it helped prevent coup d'etat in Belarus

Two citizens of Belarus, who were preparing a coup d’etat and murder of Lukashenka have been detained in Russia. These people were advised in the United States and Poland, reports the FSB Center for Public Relations.

The Russian Federal Security Service reported on the detention of Alyaksandr Fyaduta and Yury Zyankovich.

“In a special operation, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation in cooperation with the State Security Committee of the Republic of Belarus suppressed the illegal activities of Yury Leanidavich Zyankovich, a dual citizen of the United States and the Republic of Belarus, and Belarusian citizen Alyaksandr Fyaduta, planning a military coup in Belarus on the tried and tested a scenario of “color revolutions,” involving local and Ukrainian nationalists, as well as the physical removal of President Lukashenka,” says the statement.

According to intelligence agencies, Zyankovich and Fyaduta had consulted with representatives of the United States and Poland and planned to carry out a coup in Minsk on May 9.

The FSB further reports that on Zyankovich’s arrival in Moscow after his consultations in the U.S. and Poland, the planned meeting was held in a private office in a restaurant in the capital. During the meeting, the conspirators told the “Belarusian generals,” that in order to successfully carry out their plan, it is necessary to physically remove almost all the top officials of the Republic.

Among other things, the FSB reports, the conspirators planned to seize radio and television centers to broadcast their address to the people and block the units of internal troops and riot police loyal to the current government in the capital. They were planning a complete shutdown of the power system of Belarus. But some armed formations (“partisans”), located somewhere in “hidden bases”, were to start the active phase.

After documenting the meeting, the conspirators were detained by the Russian security authorities and handed over to their Belarusian partners.

With regard to Zyankovich and Fyaduta, the investigating authorities of Belarus have opened a criminal case under Article 357 (“Conspiracy or other actions aimed at seizing state power”) of the Criminal Code.

Lukashenka later said that the FBI or CIA were allegedly preparing an assassination attempt on him.

“The plan was to capture one or two children of mine and put them in a cellar. By the way, a cellar has been prepared in the Homiel region. We have detained a group, they showed us how it was all planned. Then we detected the activities of foreign intelligence agencies. Most likely, the CIA, the FBI, I do not know which Americans worked there. We found their desire to come to Minsk and to organize an attempt on the President and the children,” said Lukashenka.
